이 작업은 3년이라는 긴 시간 동안, 우리네 삶에서 나온 것들이 흙과 섞이고 발효되며 만들어진 천연 퇴비로부터 시작되었습니다.
전시장의 공기를 매일같이 살피고, 적당한 습도와 온기를 더해주는 일은 마치 얼어붙은 시간을 녹이는 과정과도 같았습니다. 지난겨울 내내 단단하게 얼어있던 퇴비는 이제 서서히 녹아내리며, 그 안에 숨죽이고 있던 생명들을 하나둘 깨워냅니다.
알을 깨고 나오는 작은 벌레들, 흙을 뚫고 돋아나 자라고 다시 시들어가는 씨앗들. 이들이 보여주는 쉼 없는 흐름을 가만히 지켜봅니다. 이곳의 '퇴비 언덕'은 단순히 버려진 것들이 쌓인 자리가 아닙니다. 삶과 죽음이 매 순간 교차하며 숨 쉬는, 살아있는 생태의 현장입니다.
This work consists of natural compost fermented over three years, made from a mixture of human and food waste. Through the daily management of humidity, temperature, and ventilation within the gallery,
the compost—once frozen through the winter—begins to thaw, awakening the life within. Insects hatch from their eggs, and seeds germinate, grow, and eventually wither in a continuous cycle. This "compost
hill" is not merely an accumulation of waste, but a living ecological site where the cycles of birth and death manifest in real-time.
